Got A Burnt Life?
Reclaim your Life via Self Care
Ever had days when your life’s work was just “too much?” Felt fried, overwhelmed and exhausted by your heart’s desire to help others? Wondering where you last left your Self? If these questions speak to you, take a few moments just for your Self and read on.
As with our blogs, Jennifer and I like to speak from the horse and human perspective. Here’s what I know about burnout from the horse’s point of view. Left to ourselves, we do not experience burnout in the herd. We spend our days nurturing ourselves and our herd. Our survival depends on our self-care. We eat, drink, sleep, play, groom, nurture and stand guard. We are one with the earth and environment. Life is good for us.
When our team works with people, we notice that burnout is a common human condition. Our participants come to our events worn out and seeking some relief. It seems as if humans have mis-learned that they must give to another before they can receive. And, with that mind set, they are on a never ending track of over giving. Jennifer is very familiar with this give to receive concept.
Before I welcomed Jennifer into our herd, she had this huge need to help others. Jennifer knew at a very early age that she was put on this earth to help people transform. You see, Jennifer is very good at seeing people for who they are at core. With her gifts and strengths, she guides them on their journey home to their authentic self.
Jennifer shared with us how people’s needs to transform felt like a never ending wave running through her life. She often felt compassion fatigue after being present to the work of helping others. Under the stress of burnout, her primary relationships with herself and her people often times would suffer. Her well of self care was dusty, dry and pretty much empty. Jennifer was exhausted and tapped out.
During Jennifer’s visits into our turn out space, we held the space for her to reconnect with her core relationship to herself. We allowed her to slow down. My herd taught her the nurturing value of self care. We modeled that a horse or a human must receive care and self nurturing before they can give to another. During her time at my side, I encouraged Jennifer to just Be. I helped her reconnect with herself by encouraging her to breath and exhale some of her over giving thoughts and feelings. My herd and I flowed the universe’s love and appreciation into her core.
If your life calling is for some much needed relief, attend one of our Transforming Burnout workshops. My herd and I promise to mirror your true self’s intentions on how to receive before you give. We would love to help you take a much needed exhale. Our human coaches provide some insightful reflective coaching, concepts and tools to soften the effects of burnout in your life. The “Unmentionable”
In Happy Events
Ever been at one of your life’s major celebrations (your only daughter’s wedding) and you felt a little bit droopy? Almost as if you had your best happy smile pasted to your face but on the inside your heart is shedding, soft tears? Don’t you just love questions that unlock deep thoughts within you? If our questions struck a chord within you, sit back, exhale and read on……...
Jennifer and I were scheduled to write our first blog in a series titled the Gifts of the Horse titled: Who is in your herd? And, more importantly who has your back? But, as “the work” sometimes goes, this blog topic is on hold.
When our team works with people, we notice that each participant has his or her intentions for their spent with us. During most of our programs, we work with the participant’s intention for their experience. However there are other times when the participant’s true self has a slightly different spin on the agenda and in we walk.
To write this blog, I almost had to drag Jennifer to her computer. She was not excited about stepping into the dark place of the unmentionable in a happy event.
Wondering what are some examples of happy human life events? A life happy event is at its essence a transition. Common happy life events include but are not limited to: births, birthdays, graduations, weddings, job changes and moving into a new home.
These events often have a heart stirring negative emotion running through them. During happy life events, people are called to let go of “what is” to open the door of what could be.
Jennifer and I shared one of her life’s happy moments. Jennifer’s eldest daughter recently graduated from high school. We noticed the joy, appreciation, love and hope Jennifer flowed into her daughter’s celebration. Jennifer smiled a lot. She accepted a lot of praise about her amazing daughter. And, yet we noticed something within her was “off.” We pay special attention to incongruences in our environment. This is one of our most precious survival strengths.
As Jennifer walked into our arena, it seemed as if she was acting out the “should” of appearing happy. We saw her wrestle with people’s expectations of how to be during her daughter’s graduation celebration. We put her in our circle, softened our warm and accepting gaze on her and allowed her to just be. Jennifer sank into her inner world and got in touch with her truth. We opened our hearts and allowed pure love to flow. We held the space for Jennifer’s tears to flow unchecked down her checks as her heart felt the sorrow of her life’s transition flush her being.
In the midst of our quiet and accepting presence, Jennifer uncovered the following unhealthy coping strategies for managing unmentionables in happy life events:
If you find that you are experiencing an unmentionable in one of your life’s happy events, implementing any of these strategies will help you exhale and give you a few moments to catch your breath:

- Keep a still upper lip, especially during happy life transitions. Present to the world a false sense of positive emotion.
- Sssshhhh, don’t talk about your pain. Don’t you dare feel negative emotion.
- Keep yourself insanely crazy busy with life’s important details.
If you find that you are experiencing an unmentionable in one of your life’s happy events, implementing any of these strategies will help you exhale and give you a few moments to catch your breath:
- Start and end your day with 5 appreciation statements of the good in your life today.
- Know that your self-care is essential. Create some daily rituals that make you feel good, grounded and/or peaceful.
- Sleep is really, really good.
- Drink more water.
- Get outside in nature and notice some beauty that you could not have created, even if you tried.
- Share your story with a person/horse who has earned the right to hear your story about the unmentionable thoughts and emotions running through your inner world.
